Token Economy Case Study/Use Case example – How to use:

Case study: Implementing a Response Cost Procedure in a Token Economy for Reducing Aggressive Behaviors in a Special Needs Student

The client, a public elementary school, approached our consulting firm for assistance in managing the aggressive behaviors exhibited by one of their students, John (name changed for privacy). John was an 8-year-old student with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). He had a history of physical aggression towards his peers and teachers, causing disruptions in his own academic progress as well as the learning environment of the classroom. The school had already implemented a token economy system to reinforce positive behaviors in John but was still struggling to effectively reduce his aggressive behaviors. Our consulting team was tasked with finding a solution to address this issue.

    Consulting Methodology:

To address the client’s concern, our consulting team conducted an extensive literature review on the use of token economies and response cost procedures in reducing aggressive behaviors in special needs students. We also conducted on-site observations and interviews with John’s teachers and caregivers to gain a deeper understanding of his behaviors and the current token economy system in place.

Based on our research and observations, we recommended implementing a response cost procedure in addition to the existing token economy system. The response cost procedure involves the removal of previously earned tokens for inappropriate behavior. This strategy has been shown to be effective in modifying behaviors in special needs students (Nakao et al., 2016).

    1. Training for Teachers and Teaching Assistants: We provided training to John’s teachers and teaching assistants on the proper implementation and maintenance of the response cost procedure. This included identifying target behaviors, setting up a token economy chart with response cost, and implementing consistent consequences for inappropriate behaviors.
    2. Individualized Behavior Plan: We developed an individualized behavior plan for John, which included specific target behaviors, reinforcement schedule, and response cost procedure. This plan was shared with John’s teachers and parents to ensure consistency across all settings.
    3. Token Economy Materials: We provided the school with materials to support the token economy system such as tokens, charts, and rewards for John.

    Implementation Challenges:

One of the main challenges in implementing the response cost procedure was ensuring consistency across all settings. It was critical for John’s teachers, caregivers, and parents to use the same strategies and consequences to modify his behaviors. This required constant communication and reinforcement of the behavior plan.

    1. Frequency of Aggressive Behaviors: The primary indicator of success was a decrease in the frequency of aggression exhibited by John towards his peers and teachers. This was measured through daily observations and recorded on a frequency chart.
    2. Acceptability of Procedure: The acceptability of the response cost procedure was also an important KPI. This was assessed through surveys and interviews with John’s teachers and parents to ensure that they were on board with the strategy.

    Management Considerations:

    1. Ongoing Support and Monitoring: It was essential to provide ongoing support and monitor the implementation of the response cost procedure to ensure its effectiveness. Our team scheduled regular check-ins with the school staff to address any concerns and provide guidance.
    2. Data Analysis: Regular data analysis of John’s behavior was essential to determine the effectiveness of the response cost procedure. Any necessary adjustments were made based on the data collected.
    3. Communication: Effective communication between all parties involved (school staff, parents, and consultants) was crucial for the success of this intervention.

The implementation of the response cost procedure in John’s token economy system resulted in a significant decrease in his aggressive behaviors. The frequency of aggressive behaviors decreased by 50% within the first three weeks of implementation and continued to decrease over time. Additionally, surveys and interviews showed high acceptability of the procedure among John’s teachers and parents. This case study highlights the importance of individualizing behavior plans for special needs students and the effectiveness of using a combination of reinforcement and response cost procedures in a token economy system.
